Tanjong Pagar in Malay indicates “cape of stakes”, a name which reflects its origins as an angling village located on a previous promontory. It has been speculated that the name was influenced by the existence of kelongs (offshore palisade angling catches built using wood risks as well as cross items) established along the stretch of shore from the village of Tanjong Malang to just what is now Tanjong Pagar.
