- Step-by-step installation
Tools Required For Installation:
Following tools must be present in your tools kit before you begin connecting the sink drain.
- Pipe cutter (To adjust the size of pipes).
- Hacksaw (Precise cutter for pipes and metal pieces).
- Channel-lock pliers (Used for grabbing and pinching different plumbing materials).
Necessary Materials:
Before any installation process, we must complete a prerequisite and that is to check the availability of necessary material. Here is a list of some of the materials that might be required to connect the sink drain.
- Plumber’s putty/ Washers
- P-trap kit
- Extension tube
- Sink drain kit
Things To Remember Before Installation:
Jumping into the installation process without checking all the boxes can be dangerous. As the connection of the sink drain is directly sending the water to the drain and sewage line. In other words, an incorrect installation can result in filling the floor with water. Conclusively, some necessary advice might help in optimizing the overall procedure.
- Making preliminary tests, measurements, and cutting of pipes is done before finalizing the installation plan.
- Gaskets and washers are always placed at the joint of two ends.
- Use pliers to tighten the P-trap connections.
- If the sink consists of a pop-up stopper, the hole of the tailpiece must face the wall.
- If the pipe enters the compression fittings at an angle, they may not work properly.
- While replacing a damaged drain pipe, be sure to use a new one with a compatible design and size.
Common Mistakes To Avoid During the Installation
It is a well-known truth that “nothing ever becomes real till it is experienced”. However, if you do not have the required experience, learn from the experience of those who have it. A few mistakes that are observed by the experiences of sink drain connections are explained below.
Avoid Over Tightening the Connections:
Always try to optimize screwing up the connections. Do not let them so loose that the water pours out of them. However, do not overtighten the connections as well because it will damage the joints. Consequently, the connections will start to leak.
Prefer Quality Material:
Be sure to use quality pipes and other materials. Do not rush for the ones with lower prices at the cost of their caliber. Prefer investing one time than investing again and again.

How to connect the sink drain?
If you have read all the helping material carefully, you are good to go through the installation process. Let’s start the connection then!!!
Install the Drain:
Usually, the drain comes with the sink. If you do not get it with the sink, you can buy it as a separate kit as well. Use silicone bead to make an impervious coating around the drain pipe before dipping it into the sinkhole. Now add a rubber ring under the sink and pat on the threads to make the movements smooth.
Install a plastic ring and a nut. Initially try to screw the nut by hand. Clean the silicon coming out of the sink and drain using a rag. Finally, attach the rubber that creates a seal with a smooth metal pipe. Tight the nuts and use pliers to make the connections leak-free.
P-Trap Adapter Installation:
You will need a glued trap adapter to attach the P-trap. Try to coat both the inside and outside surfaces with cement. Now twist the adapter gently to put it in the drain. You are done with the P-trap installation!
Install the P-trap:
Connect the two black pipes onto the waste drain by slipping a nut. Press the nut against the other pipe and tighten it with your hand. Put the slip joint nut and washer on the pipe. The tapered side of the washer should face the wall. Slip joints and washers come with the P-trap kit normally. Connect the waste drain on the wall. If the pipe size needs to be adjusted, you can use a hacksaw or pipe cutter.
Now put a couple of slip joint nuts one facing you and the other facing the wall. Then slide a washer such that the tapered side must be facing the wall. Insert the pipe and connect it to the drain. Finally, connect the U-shaped pipe and slide slip joint nuts on both ends of the pipe. Tighten all the connections using the plier.
Leakage Checking:
If you have installed the sink drain using the above set of instructions, you will not face any leakage issues after the installation. However, you should check the connections and pipes for any leakage. If there is no leakage, your part is completed successfully!!!!
Conclusion:
Connecting a sink drain is not as easy as it might look. Considering the challenges involved in the installation procedure, it is safe to call a plumber to do that for you. Nevertheless, you can do it yourself if you get enough information. The purpose of this article is to provide all the necessary information about installing a sink drain and P-trap.
